Oyster Reef Construction

Oyster reef chevrons

Construction is underway - watch this site for updates!

Site 1 Construction was completed in May 2019. Loose shell + coral rock have been placed in the water to create 23 new oyster reefs. The shell/rock mixture was transported in bags in 1-ton increments to the restoration site where the bags were cut and the mixture guided into place.

Site 2 Construction is pending funding – please contact our department for donation opportunities.

Site 3 Construction began in May 2019 and was completed in December 2020. Mesh bags were filled with loose shells to form half the reefs and the remaining material consisted of loose shell + coral rock placed on top to form four reefs.

New reefs will form over time as oyster spat naturally settle on the hard substrate and grow. Post-restoration monitoring events have shown numerous oyster recruits onto the new reefs at both completed sites along with mangrove seedlings!
