Resiliency and Sustainability

Sunny day flooding

The Earth's climate is changing, and human activity is increasing the rate of change through the release of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by the combustion of fossil fuels. Climate changes will impact the natural resources, public health and infrastructure here in Naples.

The City is addressing climate change by:

  • Planning for and adapting to climate change impacts such as sea level rise, increased storm surge, and more extreme rain and heat events. Our goal is to reduce the negative impact climate change has on infrastructure, services, and the well-being of the community.
  • Reducing emissions community wide to help slow the rate of climate change and minimize future impacts.

The City is developing a Climate Adaptation Plan (CAP) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for potential impacts of climate change on public health, infrastructure, and ecosystems in our community. As a first step, the City conducted a Climate Vulnerability Assessment to understand key public assets and infrastructure that are at risk to climate change impacts posed by sea level rise, coastal storms, extreme heat, and precipitation. Findings of the assessment will inform the next phase of the CAP focused on developing strategies to integrate climate change adaptation into city planning and operations.

A grant was received from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) in the amount of $387,255 to update the City’s 2020 Climate Vulnerability Assessment to incorporate new FDEP criteria such as additional sea level rise scenarios, inclusion of addition critical community facilities, and evaluate compound flooding due to a combination of rainfall and sea level rise.  Upon completion of these updates, a Climate Adaptation Plan will be developed which will evaluate various adaptation options for City assets identified in the Vulnerability Assessment for a range of sea level rise scenarios.  AECOM is the consultant hired to complete these efforts which will also include stakeholder input throughout the project.
