Harbour Drive & Crayton Road Intersection Improvement Project

Project Type:
Street
Project Status:
In Design

The City of Naples has completed 100% design plans for a future roundabout at the intersection of Harbour Drive and Crayton Road, these plans will be re-evaluated and modified before full construction of this project.  The existing span-wire intersection does not meet the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) standards for signalized intersections in the coastal zone.  FDOT has recommended an improvement project for several years.  Due to crash data, FDOT standards, and high maintenance costs, City staff recommended the Harbour Drive/Crayton Road intersection improvement project become a priority.  In December 2017, City Council approved staff to proceed with the design of the roundabout.  The existing signalized, span-wire intersection will be replaced with a modern, one-lane roundabout with emphasis on multi-modal safety and enhanced landscaping.

A roundabout provides several advantages over a signalized intersection, including improved pedestrian and bicycle safety, elimination of red-light running, reduced delay, calming speeds, and improved aesthetics.  The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration and the Technical Summary of Roundabouts indicates that:

  • Roundabouts improve safety: 35% reduction in total crashes, 76% reduction in injury crashes, and more than 90% reduction in fatalities, ;
  • Roundabouts have lower overall delay than signalized and all-way stop-controlled intersections;
  • Roundabouts provide environmental benefits in air quality, fuel conservation, and noise reduction;
  • Roundabouts improve pedestrian crossing opportunities;
  • Roundabouts provide opportunities for attractive entries or centerpieces to neighborhoods through landscaping, monuments, and art.
