DEBRIS IN WATERWAYS / CANALS

Collier County Stormwater Management began efforts to collect the debris from many of Collier County and City of Naples waterways over the coming weeks and months utilizing Collier County's marine debris contractor. Collier County Coastal Zone Management will concentrate on the shoreline beaches and dredged passes to the Gulf of Mexico. Collier County is conducting all of the marine debris removal for the City of Naples.

The process does take time and requires that inspection assessments be completed throughout the County - conducted from the water and the air, obtain field authorization from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to work in and around the mangroves, and secure commitments for reimbursement funding before mobilization of the contractor can occur, who is standing by. Securing State and Federal funding for the work responsibly reduces the burden on the local budget while increasing the possible scope of the overall project throughout all of Collier County. Much of the work is being done concurrently and progress is being made to deploy in a few weeks’ time, prioritized for flooding risk, health, safety, and welfare.

Early inspections and reports have already apprised us of the nature and full extent of the debris throughout the County and the City of Naples with the need for timely removal. However, waterways crew have not completed the assessment of submerged debris at this time.

*Please note: The City of Naples and Collier County are not able to clean privately owned property.
